The Goldfinch Donna Tartt

Donna Tartt's bravado novel "The Goldfinch" (starts with a bombing at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker has survived the blast and can't find his mother. He is staggering through the wreckage of marble and plaster toward an exit, and what he sees, in the "screaming silence" of the vaulted galleries, is an awful, coarsely painted still life of dead bodies "sprawled glaringly in the open, amidst explosive stains. The splashes and bursts carried a violence, like big blood sneezes, a hysterical sense of movement in the stillness." It's a viscerally horrifying tableau intended to embed itself in the reader's memory, as it will in Theo's.

But before he escapes the ruins and learns that his mother has died, Theo attends to a dying, discombobulated old man who frantically instructs him to rescue a small portrait by the 17th-century Dutch painter Carel Fabritius of a pet goldfinch chained to a perch (one of the few works of Fabritius's not destroyed in a 1654 powder-keg explosion that killed the artist at the age of 32 and leveled much of Delft). What follows in "The Goldfinch" is a dense, riveting survival story, for both Theo and the painting.

"The Goldfinch" is rich in such atmosphere and peopled by a delightfully various and hyperactive supporting cast. (Only Pippa, the idée fixe, is so idealized as to be null; the others, particularly the endearingly maniacal Boris, who moves "freely through the world with such a vigorous contempt for it," vault off the page.) And when the book, after leaping forward eight years in time, hurls Theo and his purloined painting into the underworld of fine-art fraud and drug trafficking—surprisingly linked pursuits, as it happens—the drama is tense and satisfying.
The Son – Phillip Meyer

The Luminaries –Eleanor Catton  (Mann Booker Award)

Stella Bain- Anita Shreve
